Hi! I'm Rebecca (She/Her), I'm currently completing a PhD in Sociology at Newcastle University, UK. You can read about my project here. I'm from County Durham and completed my BA in Fine Art Painting at Wimbledon College of Art. Here I developed an interest in food-work, particularly the role it plays in community cohesion, gender justice, and acts of solidarity. I also developed skills in organising exhibitions and facilitating creative workshops. After finishing my degree in 2016 I moved back to the North-East where I have worked in various support roles in the voluntary sector, and now live with my partner.

At the beginning of the first pandemic lockdown in March 2020, I was involved in starting a foodbank. Through this experience I got to understand the ethical and logistical challenges faced by projects that distribute food- however felt frustrated by the largely apolitical work of many charity spaces, so have since turned my energy to food projects approaching food work through 'solidarity not charity'. Upon returning to university in 2020 to complete my Masters in Sociology, I learned about collective and activist approaches to establishing secure food systems and reducing the effects of austerity (in a UK setting), and the violence that runs throughout today's corporate food regime. In 2022 I won ESRC funding for a doctoral project focusing on the work of community food projects.

I'm a keen swimmer (in the sea, the pool, wherever), and love cooking and sewing. I also host a bi-monthly radio show called Rose Tinted at Slack's Radio.
